Pest control for Collegedale's growing neighborhoods

Trust Exterminating provides pest control in Collegedale, TN, including termite inspections and treatment for new and older homes, fire ant control for fresh lawns, and quarterly service for ants, roaches and spiders. We're a family-owned company based in Benton, and we serve Collegedale, Ooltewah and the rest of eastern Hamilton County.

Collegedale has grown quickly. The number of housing units roughly doubled between 2000 and 2020, so many homes here are newer builds on land that was recently wooded or farmed. That kind of growth brings its own pest patterns.

Freshly graded lots and new sod are easy targets for fire ants. Disturbed soil and wood left from construction can draw termites. Meanwhile, older homes near the university and along the Wolftever Creek valley deal with the usual moisture-related problems.

We're based in Benton, east of here, and work in this corner of Hamilton County regularly.

Local pest pressure

What we see most in Collegedale

  • Eastern subterranean termites

New construction isn't immune. Builders' pre-treatments wear off over time, and buried wood scraps or form boards near the foundation can feed a colony.

  • Red imported fire ants

Hamilton County is entirely within the state's fire ant quarantine area. Newly graded yards and fresh sod are where mounds often show up first.

    Field guide
  • Odorous house ants and other sugar ants

Trails into kitchens are common in newer subdivisions, especially after heavy rain floods their outdoor nests.

  • German cockroaches

Apartments, student rentals and shared housing near campus see more turnover, and roaches often move in with furniture and boxes.

  • Stink bugs

Brown marmorated stink bugs gather on sunny walls in the fall and slip inside around windows and siding to overwinter.

Why it matters here

Local conditions that drive pests

  • Rapid new construction

Collegedale's housing stock grew from about 2,200 units in 2000 to more than 4,300 in 2020. Newer homes need termite protection kept current and lawns watched for fire ants.

  • Wolftever Creek valley

The city sits in the valley of Wolftever Creek, which cuts through White Oak Mountain at Collegedale Gap. Low ground near the creek stays damp, which suits termites and mosquitoes.

  • Wooded ridges nearby

White Oak Mountain and the surrounding ridges keep woodland close to many neighborhoods. Homes along those edges see more spiders, ticks and rodents.

  • A university town

Southern Adventist University brings rentals and shared housing. Frequent move-ins mean more chances for roaches or bed bugs to arrive with belongings.

Questions

Pest control in Collegedale: FAQ

My house is only a few years old. Do I need termite protection?

Probably yes. Many builders pre-treat the soil, but that treatment doesn't last forever, and any warranty may expire or need renewal. An inspection tells you where things stand and whether a bait or liquid treatment makes sense now.

Why are there so many fire ant mounds in my new yard?

Fire ants are quick to move into disturbed soil and new sod, and Hamilton County is entirely within the state quarantine area. Treating the whole yard, rather than one mound at a time, usually gives longer control.

I rent near campus. Can you treat an apartment or rental?

Yes. For rentals we'll usually coordinate with the landlord or property manager. Roaches and bed bugs especially need the whole unit, and sometimes neighboring units, treated to stay gone.

Do you serve Ooltewah and the area around Collegedale too?

Yes. We serve Collegedale along with Ooltewah, East Brainerd and the rest of eastern Hamilton County.

What should I do about stink bugs getting in every fall?

Seal gaps around windows, siding, vents and utility lines before they start gathering in September and October. An exterior treatment on sunny walls can help, and a vacuum is the easiest way to remove the ones already inside.
