Pest control for homes on Walden Ridge
Trust Exterminating provides pest control in Signal Mountain, TN, focused on what wooded mountain lots bring: tick treatments, carpenter ant and carpenter bee control, rodent exclusion, and termite inspections. We're a family-owned company based in Benton, and we adjust treatment to the cooler, shadier conditions on top of Walden Ridge.
Signal Mountain sits at about 1,700 feet on the south end of Walden Ridge, roughly 1,000 feet above the Tennessee River. That height usually means slightly cooler temperatures than in Chattanooga below, and the town is heavily wooded.
The pest mix up here leans toward the woods. Ticks, mice and other wildlife, carpenter ants in damp wood, and carpenter bees in exposed trim come up more often than they do in the valley. Termites are still a concern, as they are everywhere in Hamilton County.
The drive from our Benton office runs around an hour or a bit more, so we group mountain visits on a schedule.

What we see most in Signal Mountain
Ticks
Wooded lots, leaf litter and deer moving through yards give ticks plenty of habitat. Tree lines and shaded edges of the lawn are where they concentrate.
Field guideCarpenter ants
Shade, tree cover and rain keep wood damp. Carpenter ants nest in moist or decaying wood in decks, window frames, roof edges and trees touching the house.
Field guideHouse mice and other rodents
Homes surrounded by woods are close to mouse habitat. Cooler fall nights on the mountain send them looking for warm crawl spaces and attics.
Field guideCarpenter bees
Cedar siding, rough-sawn trim and unpainted decks are common in wooded settings and are exactly what carpenter bees bore into each spring.
Field guideEastern subterranean termites
Cooler temperatures don't keep termites away. Fallen limbs, stumps and damp soil around shaded foundations can all feed a colony.

Why it matters here
Local conditions that drive pests
Elevation
At around 1,700 feet, Signal Mountain is about 1,000 feet higher than the river valley below. Temperatures tend to run a few degrees cooler, which can shift when some insects become active in spring and fall.
Heavy tree cover
Much of the town is wooded, with homes set among mature trees. Shade keeps roofs, decks and siding damp longer, and overhanging limbs give ants and rodents a bridge onto the house.
Wildlife in the neighborhood
Woods on and around Walden Ridge bring deer, rodents and other wildlife close to homes. That raises tick pressure and the chance of animals looking for shelter in attics and crawl spaces.
Homes from several eras
Development dates to the early 1900s, and the town grew significantly in the 1970s. Older homes and those from the 1970s growth period may have aging wood trim and crawl spaces that need attention.

Questions
Pest control in Signal Mountain: FAQ
Are ticks worse on Signal Mountain than down in Chattanooga?
Wooded yards with leaf litter and deer traffic generally have more tick habitat, and that describes a lot of Signal Mountain. Treating lawn edges and keeping grass short near the woods helps, along with tick preventives for pets.
I found large black ants in my kitchen. Are they carpenter ants?
They may be. Carpenter ants are larger than most house ants and often show up in spring. Because they nest in damp wood, we'll look for a moisture problem in the house or a nest in a nearby tree or stump.
Does the cooler mountain weather mean fewer pests?
Not really. The season may start or end a little differently, but termites, ants, spiders and rodents are all present on the mountain. Rodents in particular tend to push indoors once nights cool off in the fall.
Something is living in my attic. Can you help?
We handle mice and rats and can seal the openings they use. Larger wildlife such as raccoons or squirrels may need a licensed wildlife specialist, and we'll tell you honestly if that's the case.
How do I protect cedar siding and decks from carpenter bees?
Painted or stained wood is less attractive than bare wood, so keeping finishes up helps. Existing holes can be treated and then sealed, ideally in early spring before new bees start drilling.
